A special meeting and book presentation with Vita Kovalenko, Ukrainian politician, public speaker, and author of the book “Waarheid onder vuur” / “Truth Under Fire”.
It was an inspiring evening at the Oude Raadhuis Aalsmeer, where we presented Vita Kovalenko’s book Waarheid onder vuur (Truth Under Fire).
We were warmly welcomed by Ulla Eurich, the host of this beautiful space and Chair of the Aalsmeer Foundation for Art and Culture. Thanks to her, the Ukrainian-Dutch exhibition “State of Temporality” and its public programme became possible.
The evening began with my curatorial tour of the exhibition, which explores forced migration from personal, intimate, social, cultural, and political perspectives. The exhibition brings together the works of 8 Ukrainian and 2 Dutch women artists.
We were honoured to hear welcoming words from Sybrand JR de Vries, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Aalsmeer, responsible for art and culture. We are also deeply grateful to Maria Catalina Rohovei, Cultural Attaché of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, for her warm and thoughtful speech, and to the Embassy of Ukraine for its continuous support of Ukrainian cultural initiatives.
The central moment of the evening was our meeting with Vita Kovalenko, a Ukrainian voice in the Netherlands since 2014, a member of D66, and recently elected to the Dordrecht City Council. Vita is actively involved in civic life, appears on television, and speaks on cultural and political platforms.
In her first book, Waarheid onder vuur, Vita tells the story of Ukraine through her own experience and through the stories of other Ukrainians. She also writes about russian propaganda, how to recognise it, and how to resist it.
After the presentation, a queue formed for Vita’s autograph session, while guests continued conversations and reflections in a warm and informal atmosphere.
We are sincerely grateful to Vita, Ulla, our honoured guests from the Embassy of Ukraine and the Municipality of Aalsmeer, and everyone who joined us.
It was an evening full of meaningful conversations, shared reflection, and a deeper understanding of Ukraine, its people, and the power of truth in times of war.
